lyrics
Would I rather be La Pascualita?
Embalmed bride of Chihuahua
Ninety years on display
and stunning as a dummy is still
Undying angel, caught before
her beauty turned like every angel
In life, no one ignored her
now in death no one ever will
Her visitors now are the kind who prefer
a pretty thing dead to be able to see it up close
I’d have been the corpse you could behold
to keep feeling like I was why beauty was born
Yes, but if I were beauty,
unbodied, disinterested sweetness herself
I’d say get over yourself, grieve later
but first put me down
It must be a mistake every time beauty
takes our little shape, turning Pascualitas
into dolls into lonely men’s darlings
If beauty’d stayed put as a plum, at whose
worthier grave would we all be fawning?
Little haunted burial ground
will not bring my beauty back around
Where will I bury her now?
He would have left with a bang
once my beauty left with a bang
How else would a celebrity go?
But I wouldn’t have cried, the price of
regard is to keep a straight face
That waxy contraption–was it always
just ice on the mountain?
I should let it dry in the sun, but just one more
dance then I’ll be done
People say if it dies then it wasn’t
beautiful in the first place but
I was oh, it was
Oh, I was
Oh, it was
Promise you’ll come back reborn a stone
Make it something no one can hold
I free you to solve bigger problems
Now that you’re gone, what are bigger problems?
I melt the gelid offering down,
let it soak and look around
What will I grieve over now?
You know, it wasn't my favorite for a while, but for some reason i decided to listen to it on loop a few weeks ago and now I can't stop thinking about it.
I love the synths, the tone, the lyricism, even the music videos which I feel I should mention!!!
(also, should've been me reminds me a bit of abba which is an automatic bonus in my book) praisedrays
The great underlying instrumentation paired with Florence's droll stream of consciousness lyrics make this album stand out. It feels so personal and confessional. Favorite tracks are Strong Feelings and Leafy. I've heard Scratchard Lanyard on alt radio and love that one as well. tofupotpie
This is thoughtful and melancholy, but not morose -- there is hope in its sheer beauty. Her sensitivity as an arranger and producer is as impressive as her songwriting and singing; the whole album has a lovely sense of texture and space. Joe Madden
Portland shoegaze that plays, as the best representatives of the genre do, with huge, hollow atmosphere against intimate observations. Bandcamp New & Notable Nov 23, 2016
Dreamlike songs from this London artist with gentle vocal melodies gliding through cloudy layers of guitar and synth. Bandcamp New & Notable Apr 10, 2022
Goose Bumps... how can a record take you on such a journey?!? This one just does for me... I feel like she's in my mind at times... Love this record so much... and exhale! Vinyl-222
